We are proud to presentAnne Karine Thorbjørnsen’s third solo exhibition atSalgshallen. In the exhibition
Nonsensical Dreamers, Thorbjørnsen presents resin-painted draperies andtextile-formworkconcrete sculptures. The materials are treated “fake” leather sewn together in pieces, and ruchedlycra. The textiles relate to welded steel forms – a frame, a kind of body. The leather is soft as butter and falls naturally into alluringfolds, like an organic movement. But, the textile is coated with layers of spray paint and resin that stiffen the softness, creates a glossy surface, and stagnates the motion.
The collaboration with Thorbjørnsen began in 2020 with draperies presented on moving models as well as an exhibition of the same works displayed on the wall. This marked a transition from draping on the body to shaping the fold through sculpture. Her exploration of drapery and the fold is central to her artistic practice, both thematically and as a technique. In Thorbjørnsen's work, the fold is both aesthetic form and philosophical concept – it becomes a landscape for exploring how we relate to ourselves, each other, and our surroundings.
Anne Karine Thorbjørnsen (b. 1982, Akershus) lives and works in Elverum. She holds both a BA and an MA in fashion design from Central Saint Martins in London, and established her practice after graduating in 2012. She has presented solo exhibitions at Hamar Kunstforening (2025), MLAG Bergen (2024), Format Oslo (2023), Oplandia Senter for Samtidskunst Lillehammer (2022), and Salgshallen Oslo (2020 and 2021).
