In the exhibition
Skinny Legends, Duffee presents a series of silk paintings framed by weavings with small sculptures made of tin, bronze, and aquaresin. In a visual autofiction, historical contexts intertwine with contemporary motifs that depict intimate everyday moments of anonymous female subjects in mundane daily life. The works are anecdotes about women in our personal lives, small stories about random individuals, with a figure either present or noticeably absent—much like the contents of a bag leaving clues about a life. The title
Skinny Legendsrefers to a phrase often used to describe a woman whose fans consider her underrated. It is also a moniker for drag artist Trixie Mattel. Through her works, Duffee extends this term to ordinary people, who rarely have the opportunity or desire to be part of history books, drawing a connection between them and the invisible ways in which traditional women's work, such as textile production, has influenced societal development and shaped the global economy.
Victoria Duffee (b. 1988 NYC) lives and works in Oslo. She was educated at the School of Visual Arts (2007-2010) in New York and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2016-2018). Over the past ten years, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Oslo, New York, and Los Angeles, and has had solo exhibitions at Salgshallen Gallery and Buer Gallery (Oslo). She has exhibited in institutional venues such as Chart Art Fair with Kunsthall Oslo, and at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter by contributing a piece to artist Anna Daniel’s
A Gift From A Woman. Other projects include the art criticism magazine
Vi Ser På Kunst, which she co-founded with art historian Andreas Breivik in 2016. In 2020, she created
Kunsteventyr, an online series promoted through Black Box Teater, aimed at teaching art history to children stuck at home during the pandemic using a DIY (Do It Yourself) approach. In August this year, she will have a residency at Praksis, Oslo, and will host an interactive food-based performance accompanied by a sculpture at the NY gallery Marvin’s Gardens.
